The Story of the Mid-Autumn Festival: Chang'e Flying to the Moon

The Mid-Autumn Festival (which falls on October 6th this year, within the National Day break) is one of the most important traditional Chinese holidays, symbolizing family reunion and harmony. It is celebrated when the moon is believed to be at its fullest and brightest.

The most famous legend associated with the festival is the tale of Chang'e, the Moon Goddess.

In ancient times, ten suns appeared in the sky, scorching the earth. A skilled archer named Hou Yi shot down nine of them, saving the world. For his heroic deed, he was rewarded with an elixir of immortality. Hou Yi didn't want to become immortal without his beloved wife, Chang'e, so he asked her to safeguard the potion.

One day, while Hou Yi was out hunting, his apprentice, Feng Meng, tried to steal the elixir. To prevent him from getting it, Chang'e drank the entire potion herself. This caused her to float uncontrollably toward the heavens. To remain close to her husband, she chose the Moon Palace as her permanent residence.

Heartbroken, Hou Yi would set out Chang'e’s favorite fruits and cakes on the night of the full moon every year, longing for his wife. This act of love and remembrance evolved into the custom of appreciating the moon and eating moon cakes (which symbolize the full moon and family togetherness) during the festival.

May the brilliance of the full moon bring you and your loved ones joy, good fortune, and abundant happiness. We wish you a wonderful and restful holiday!

Happy National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival!
